Allan and Rosalee Lockyer run Prospect
Village Bed and Breakfast (www.prospectvillagebb.ca),
located near Peggy’s Cove and Halifax, Nova Scotia. Allan Lockyer
tells Burke Campbell what motivated him to become an entrepreneur.
LURE OF THE LIFT: “Originally,
I’m from
Newfoundland. When I was young, I got my start maintaining and
refurbishing elevators in
Toronto. Elevators are challenging because they involve
electronics, hydraulics, hoisting, and many other skills.”
THE CORE SKILL: “In 1972, I started my own company. I enjoy people, and
if you go into business, that’s essential, above all else.”
A LEAP OF FAITH: “In 1978, I
married Rosalee, an artist and musician from Nova Scotia. A couple of years ago, we discovered and bought this
great Victorian house next to a fishing village in Nova Scotia. Built in 1849, it was once a convent run by the
Sisters of Charity.”
A HOUSE OF ENCHANTMENT: “I used
most of my skills to restore this place. People find us on the Internet
and we attract guests from across
North America
.”
WELCOME HOME: “My wife cooks for
our guests. We also organize professional concerts and hold them in the
huge living room. This is our home and it’s a joy to share it.”
