Daughters
Catherine and Anne Monna, along with father Bernard, run Cassis Monna
& Filles (www.cassismonna.com).
Located near
Quebec City
, the sisters are the 5th generation to be
involved in wine and liqueur production. Catherine Monna tells the Financial Post what motivated
her to become an entrepreneur.
The
history vine: “Our parents came from
France
where dad’s family
made wine and liqueur. In
Quebec
, he decided to cultivate blackcurrants, a fruit high in vitamin C and
antioxidants that thrives in the cold climate.
It is from this fruit that we derive the liqueur crème de
cassis.”
Wonderful
growth: “I grew up in this business. After studies in
Montreal
, I returned home and father encouraged Anne and me to
assume management of the firm. With hard work, this last year has been our
best.”
Affirmation: “Recently, we joined Économusée, a network of
artisans in
Quebec
and Atlantic Canada, where each business member
practices a traditional trade or craft. This network has helped profile
our business as part of
Quebec
’s history and culture.”
The reach of wine: “We’re working to let more Canadians know
about us and the pleasure of drinking crème de cassis and kir [black
currant liqueur mixed with white wine].”
